With input from Network Rail, we assembled a range of datasets to build a picture of interdependent railway infrastructure and its vulnerabilities. We focused on the failure of support systems such as signalling and monitoring, electrification, heating, lighting etc. that lead to disruption across the railway. These were quantified by passenger trip disruptions across the entire network. Our work included testing multiple failure scenarios from random shock and extreme flood events in order to understand the risks to, and resilience of, GB’s railway network.
