Transport Resilience Review

Department for Transport

ITRC’s work on geo-hazards and on national scale risk analysis of interdependent network infrastructure failures due to extreme hazards informed the Review of the resilience of the transport network to extreme weather in July 2014. The Review was commissioned by The Secretary of State for Transport. It assessed the resilience of roads, railways, ports and airports to extreme weather, including flooding (pluvial, fluvial, coastal and groundwater), storms, high winds and extreme heat.

This review was commissioned in response to the extreme weather experienced during the winter of 2013 and 2014. It was conducted by a panel of experts and sought evidence from across the transport community.

The report:

  • sets out the context in which it was conducted
  • gives an overview of the weather events of 2013 and 2014
  • provides commentary on the expected severity and frequency of such events in the future
